Eric Bana is often introduced as an Australian actor. However, you can tell that there is something a little bit different about him, not that it matters with this talented hunky actor. Born in Melbourne in August 1968, Bana has Croatian ancestry on his father’s side. His father was a logistics manager and his German-born mother was a hairdresser. His birth name was Eric Banadinovic. He did not want to be thought to be too different, though, since Bana’s family had experienced some cruel racist remarks through the years. He grew up being friends with other people of European origin.

As a young boy of six or seven, Eric already displayed a remarkable talent for mimicking other people’s voices, mannerisms, and movements. Despite this early display of acting, he only thought of making it a career in 1991 when he tried his hand at standup comedy. He worked as barman and busboy while doing his standup work to make ends meet and to support his quest for furthering his career. When he did get his break in television in 1993, his work is mainly comedy. He wrote his own sketches much to the admiration of his co-workers. This was not yet the Eric Bana that most people know and love, but this was an Eric that did not have experience in dramatic roles.

In 1997, he starred in the dramatic surprise hit The Castle. The latter part of his career is better known with Hollywood hits and Hollywood almost-hits. He was cast in lighthearted films and in serious ones, such as the controversial Munich. From time to time, he comes back to star in Australian films, such as the critically acclaimed Romulus, My Father. Bana is married to publicist Rebecca Gleeson. They have two kids and live in Melbourne.
