| Denzel Washington With a presence such as his, it is no wonder that Denzel Washington often lands roles that further emphasizes his acting ability. He is also very versatile at that, not sticking to just one genre but actually exploring. Even his background is versatile; his road toward being an actor is not straightforward. Washington is a Mount Vernon, New York native, born in 1954 to a Pentecostal minister and owner of a beauty parlor. He is the middle child of three. Originally bent on becoming a journalist in Fordham University, it was the acting bug that finally took over as Denzel’s main interest, thanks to student drama productions. He still did get his B.A. in Drama and Journalism from Fordham in 1977 but proceeded to study acting. He only spent one year training at the American Conservatory Theatre but he did not have trouble earning television roles. In 1981, he finally made it to the big screen with George Segal in the movie Carbon Copy. His next big role is as Dr. Chandler in the hit television series, St. Elsewhere. He played doctor for six years. Then, the rest of the world got to know him in his Best Supporting Actor winning role in the 1989 movie Glory, where he played a runaway slave named Tripp. The win opened several more doors for Washington. The '90s is filled with important roles in big budget films for Washington. He even decided to take the next step as a director in 2002’s Antwone Fisher. Despite all the buzz in his career, Washington enjoys a quiet family life with Pauletta Washington, his wife since 1983, and their four children. The family lives in Los Angeles at the moment. |
